Stephen's address to the Sanhedrin made it clear that the Jewish patriarchs believed in a heavenly hope and not just a promise of actual possession of the land of Canaan. When the Israelites replaced spiritual things with material things, they were guilty of idolatry. They were believers in name only, so they rejected God, persecuted true believers, and suppressed the truth.
